Castilleja miniata, Giant Red Indian Paintbrush

The sight of fiery scarlet Indian Paintbrush in mountain meadows from July to September can take your breath away! The paintbrush are in fact the bracts on this stout plant, only about 12-30 inches tall, found in NW mountain or coastal bogs and bluffs, often near serpentine and below 4500'. Paintbrush roots are parasitic, drawing nutrients from a nearby host plant (any perennial). It is our most common and most brilliant Indian Paintbrush. Aren't we lucky. Native!

Mature size: 12-30 inches tall
